In the US there are 3 main types of Electrical installation box:
- Round Pan Electrical Boxes - usually 1/2" or 3/4" deep and commonly used for ceiling fixtures but often wall fixtures
- Rectangular Electrical Boxes - Commonly used for Single Light Switches but also for slimline wall fixtures such as Picture Lights
- Square or Octagon Electrical Boxes - Commonly used for multiple Gang Switches (2-Gang, 3-Gang, etc...) and not typically used for mounting of light fixtures
The numbers above correspond to the referenced drawing below which will help to provide a more clear understanding of each box and it's application. It is crucial that you consider the type of box required prior to acquisition of any light fixture as you may find that a box such as the Round Pan will not accommodate a slimline Wall Light Fixture (as an example).
